5 Safety Tips for RV Rangers Maintenance Workers

For many an intrepid traveler, a Recreational Vehicle means freedom and flexibility. RV owners can go where they want with confidence that they have the comforts of home within their motorized abode.

What could possibly go wrong?

An RV has all the complexity of any large vehicle plus the intricacy of plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. These systems are subject to rigors that a house sitting on a hilltop does not endure. Damage to seals and seams can also wreak havoc, and the rooftop is especially vulnerable.

RV owners should take some responsibility for upkeep and care; however, comprehensive maintenance is best left to professionals with the necessary skills and experience. A modern repair facility should also have fall protection and other safety measures that typical RV owners should never have to consider as they set their sights on the open road.

1. Pit Covers for Safe Access Underneath

Chassis, suspension, brakes, exhaust, drive train, fuel system, plumbing, tanks, drainage, axles and bearings, wiring and cables, propane delivery—there is a long list of system parts and components that need to be inspected and maintained from beneath an RV. Lifts are expensive and potentially dangerous. A vehicle maintenance pit provides easy access to the underside of an RV and gives workers outstanding freedom of movement and flexibility to perform their tasks efficiently.

But what about the risk of falling into an open pit when no vehicle is being serviced?

A vehicle maintenance pit cover closes over the pit when no vehicle is in service to provide permanent fall protection. Constructed of strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum, the concertina-style pit cover is easy to open and close. It features adjustable location and spring-loaded positioning pins to fit different widths and lock the cover in place.

2. Platforms for Safe Access from the Side

Opening the hood and accessing the engine is a work-at-height task where a maintenance access platform gives a technician freedom of movement and flexibility that a step ladder cannot match for safety and productivity. A safety platform also enables workers to reach, inspect, clean, and replace or repair awnings, windows, slide-out mechanisms (e.g., weather stripping), exterior walls, lights, and other components on the sides of an RV.

A modular platform features aluminum or glass-reinforced nylon treads that are anti-slip, non-bounce, and self-draining. These treads form the steps and platform decks and are enclosed by pipe-fitted frames and guardrails constructed of aluminum or galvanized steel for strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. A mobile work platform has locking casters for the portability of a ladder but with superior safety.

Work platforms can also be customized with racks and shelves for tools and supplies and equipped with shop services (e.g., air, water, electrical).

3. Lifelines for Safe Access from Above.

Accessing the roof of an RV is necessary for a variety of purposes, such as applying a protective roof coating, general cleaning, inspections for damage, and tending to storage racks, roof railings, and gutters. In addition, there could be vents and skylights, antennas and satellite dishes, solar panels, or air conditioning units on the roof that require maintenance. Overhead fall protection is a must.

A rigid rail overhead track system mounts from existing roof purlins and secondary steel without extensive engineering. (A typical unit installs within a day.) The technician wears a harness and lanyard connected to a trolley that glides effortlessly along the track, keeping the fall arrest distance to a minimum while offering optimum freedom of movement and flexibility. The modular rigid rail system requires little maintenance and can be repositioned to accommodate changes to the facility.

4. Guardrails Stand Up for Safety

Modular guardrails built with aluminum or galvanized steel pipe and connecting components are installed easily without welding or drilling. They can offer added safety throughout a maintenance and repair shop:

  • Provide a physical barrier between work areas and walkways to protect customers and staff, especially when moving vehicles or equipment.
  • Protect parked vehicles from accidental damage caused by moving other vehicles or equipment.
  • Direct traffic flow safely and efficiently.
  • Prevent falls from elevated areas, such as mezzanines and loading docks.
  • Cordon off hazardous areas (e.g., large machinery, welding, storage of flammable materials).

5. All-around Warehouse Traffic Protection

RV maintenance work often occurs in busy environments where other vehicles or machinery operate and where valuable parts and materials are stored on nearby racks and shelves. Moving vehicles, including forklifts, pose a danger to pedestrians, other vehicles and equipment, and inventory. Safety impact barriers help protect people from injury and equipment, vehicles, and materials from damage. Heavy-duty steel construction with high visibility “safety yellow” powder coating adds a crucial layer of protection.

Safety for Maintenance Technicians and Safe Travel for RV Owners

By following these safety tips and utilizing the appropriate safety equipment, maintenance workers can significantly reduce the risk of injury while working on RVs. Keeping safety a priority ensures not only the well-being of the workers but also the reliability and safety of the vehicles they service—a boon to RV owners.
