Pharmaceutical Safety Solutions: Fall Protection and Access Systems for High-Risk Environments

Our corner drugstore is a clean and safe place. If we pick up a prescription, we are attended to by a pleasant, knowledgeable, and well-trained pharmacist. If we simply need over-the-counter remedies for a cold, allergy, or muscle ache, store employees are friendly and helpful. The top shelf is the only “at-height” concern we may have.

Back at the pharmaceutical plant, however, the manufacturing process is complicated and often involves operations in high-risk areas like production plants, research labs, and storage facilities. Many tasks are conducted at elevated positions or around hazardous equipment and restricted-access zones. Operating in a highly regulated environment, the pharmaceutical industry must adhere to stringent protocols for worker safety by providing reliable fall protection.

Treatments

Three key factors to consider for fall protection equipment include:

  1. Regulatory Compliance: Systems and procedures must adhere to standards set by organizations such as Health Canada, the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), and the Canadian Occupational Health & Safety Regulations (COHSR). The latter requires fall protection systems when workers are exposed to a fall of 10 feet (3 metres) or more.
  2. Corrosion Resistance: Many pharmaceutical facilities use chemicals that can corrode traditional safety systems. Pipe-fitted barrier systems of stainless steel, aluminum, or galvanized steel are robust, durable, and corrosion-resistant.
  3. Non-invasive Design: Preventing contamination or disruption of sensitive environments is crucial. Modular, pipe-fitted barrier systems are installed without welding or drilling. There is minimal disruption to workflow. Virtually no maintenance is necessary. Routine cleaning maintains hygienic conditions.

Gateway Fall Protection with Guardrails and Safety Gates

Safety railings made from aluminum or galvanized steel are ideal for pharmaceutical environments where durability, corrosion resistance, and hygiene are essential. Their modular design allows easy installation around machines, mezzanines, walkways, and platforms.

A self-closing gate provides safe access to stairs, platforms, and restricted areas designated by a safety railing system. It features a spring-loaded mechanism that automatically closes as the worker passes through the opening. Made from aluminum or galvanized steel, these safety gates are available in single-width, double-width, and full-height.

An aluminum or galvanized steel pivoting pallet gate protects workers on mezzanines during loading and unloading operations. Available in four configurations, pivot gates fit seamlessly into a guardrail system. The modular design allows for easy replacement of pipe or fitting components damaged by a forklift.

Kee Platform / Fall Protection / Access Platform

Step Up to the Platforms

Modular work platforms provide access to machinery, tanks, racks, shelves, and other elevated workstations. The anti-slip steps and platform decks are secured in stable aluminum or galvanized steel frames. Guardrails provide fall protection that gives workers optimum freedom of movement and confidence in their safety. The modular design facilitates easy installation and reconfiguration if needed.

Types of work access platforms include:

  • Static (fixed) platforms are ideal for permanent installation and regularly performed tasks.
  • Mobile platforms are fitted with heavy-duty locking casters for station-to-station portability.
  • Custom platforms can be equipped with racks, shelves, air, water, or electrical connections or be engineered for adjustable height capability.
Traffic Shield

Driving Traffic Safety

A pharmaceutical processing plant requires a near-constant movement of materials and goods by forklift to keep pace with production, packaging, and shipping. Traffic safety barriers are needed to safeguard people and expensive capital equipment, racks, loading dock doors, products, and the building itself. They feature heavy-duty construction, are powder-coated in “high-visibility” yellow, and are easily adaptable to the area that needs to be shielded.

Higher Expectations for the Rooftop

With core operational space at a premium, building services systems, such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, are often housed on the rooftop. They are no less crucial to pharmaceutical manufacturing, which requires strict environmental control, hence regular servicing of HVAC equipment. Yet, the rooftop poses grave risks for maintenance and repair workers who need practical and compliant roof fall protection solutions.

Safety Rooftop
  1. Safe Roof Access: Open roof hatches present significant fall hazards. A roof hatch railing kit ensures safe entry and exit from roof hatches by providing a protective guardrail surrounding the opening. It features a self-closing gate to prevent falling back through the hatch.
  2. Roof Edge Protection: The roof edge is the most obvious and present danger on the rooftop. A perimeter roof guardrail system constructed of aluminum or galvanized steel modular railings adapts to virtually any roof layout and is installed without welding or penetrating the roof.
  3. Safe Navigation & Elevated Access: From a simple mini-stepover that allows workers to avoid tripping over rooftop obstructions (e.g., piping, cables, conduits) to elevated workstations to reach panels, instruments, filters, and other hard-to-reach areas, roof platforms provide a stable, anti-slip surface for workers to traverse the rooftop safely and perform their tasks with confidence.
  4. Skylight Fall Protection: Skylights are often overlooked, but they are technically holes in the roof that a worker can fall through. Skylight screens are galvanized or stainless steel mesh that covers the skylight without blocking the sunlight. Skylight railing kits surround the skylight (or dome) light.
  5. Lifeline Fall Arrest: An engineered horizontal lifeline provides active fall protection that is highly adaptable to complex roof layouts. It features galvanized and stainless steel components and can support up to three workers within each 39-ft. (2-3/4 metre) span between roof anchors.
  6. Fall Arrest Anchors: Compliant roof anchor systems provide secure attachment points for personal fall arrest systems. A rigid post anchor is installed permanently into the roof and is ideal where guardrails are impractical. A mobile anchor for flat or low-sloped roofs features high-friction counterweights and a central pedestal to attach the lifeline.

Added Protection with Certified Training
